Fuel Relief for Working Families

The New Zealand government has announced a targeted support package to help families manage rising fuel prices, benefiting around 140,000 households.

Under the proposal, the eligible families with children will receive an additional $50 per week through an increase to the In-Work Tax Credit. The payment is expected to begin from 7 April and will be distributed either weekly or fortnightly, depending on existing payment schedules.

The support is aimed at working families on moderate incomes, with eligibility based on current income thresholds. It will also extend to some families receiving reduced payments under the scheme. However, beneficiaries and super-annuitants will not receive this additional support, as their payments are adjusted separately each year.

The measure is intended to provide temporary relief and will remain in place for up to one year, or until fuel prices fall below $3 per litre for a sustained period. The total cost of the package is estimated at $373 million, to be funded within the Government’s existing budget allowance. The announcement comes amid continued pressure from high fuel costs, with petrol prices recently reaching as high as $4 per litre in some areas, and national averages remaining elevated.

The Government has stated that the package is designed to support those most affected, while avoiding broader measures that could add to inflation. The focus remains on providing targeted assistance to working households facing increased living costs.

While the support may not cover all groups, it reflects a measured approach to balancing immediate relief with wider economic considerations.
